The oral exam is where B2 learners can gain the most points with good preparation – because much of what you say can be planned in advance. This guide covers the Goethe B2 Sprechen exam and the telc B2 Mündlicher Ausdruck: how each exam is structured, what examiners want to hear in the Vortrag, the discussion and the planning task, model outlines and dialogues, and the phrases that make your German sound fluent. Whether you are searching for B2 speaking practice, telc B2 Sprechen topics or a German B2 oral exam strategy, start here and then practise with a partner.
What the exam looks like
| Goethe-Zertifikat B2 – Sprechen | telc Deutsch B2 – Mündlicher Ausdruck | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Pair exam with two examiners (approx. 15 min); individual exam approx. 10 min | Pair exam (group of 3 if numbers are odd), approx. 15 min per pair |
| Preparation | 15 minutes, alone, notes allowed; candidates get different sheets (A/B) | 20 minutes; notes allowed. The Teil 1 topic can be prepared at home |
| Warm-up | Introduction, approx. 1 min, not scored | Einander kennenlernen, approx. 1 min, not scored |
| Teil 1 | Vortrag: choose 1 of 2 topics, structured talk following given points, then a question from your partner or the examiner (approx. 4 min per candidate) | Über Erfahrungen sprechen: a topic chosen from a list of 7; approx. 1.5 min monologue each, then questions (approx. 5 min, 25 points) |
| Teil 2 | Diskussion: a controversial question with guiding points; exchange arguments, react to your partner, finish with a summary (approx. 5 min together) | Diskussion: both read the same text on a controversial issue, give its main points and discuss (approx. 5 min, 25 points) |
| Teil 3 | – | Gemeinsam etwas planen (approx. 5 min, 25 points) |
| Scoring | 100 points; Aufgabenerfüllung, Kohärenz, Interaktion, Wortschatz, Strukturen, Aussprache, plus questions and answers in Teil 1; module passed with 60 | 75 points; per Teil: Ausdrucksfähigkeit, Aufgabenbewältigung, Formale Richtigkeit (7/5/3/0 each), Aussprache/Intonation (4/2/1/0) |
Both exams reward interaction, not just correct sentences. A candidate who speaks slowly but reacts to the partner usually does better than one who delivers a memorised speech and ignores everyone else.
Strategy for each part: Goethe B2 Sprechen
Preparation time (15 min)
Choose your Vortrag topic in the first minute – take the one where you have personal examples. Spend about 9 minutes on the Vortrag and 5 on the discussion. Write key words, never full sentences: you will be tempted to read them aloud.
Teil 1 – Vortrag (approx. 4 min per candidate)
- Introduction: name the topic and announce your structure: “Ich spreche heute über … Zuerst …, danach …, zum Schluss …”
- Main part: follow the given points in order, with one example each.
- Conclusion: sum up and give your opinion: “Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen …”
- Question: after each talk, the partner or the examiner asks a question. Listen carefully to your partner’s Vortrag and note a possible question while they speak.
Trap: speaking too fast to “get through” the points. Pauses at transitions make you sound more structured, not less fluent.
Teil 2 – Diskussion (approx. 5 min)
Open with your position and one argument, then hand over: “Wie siehst du das?” Use the guiding points as a checklist, react to every argument (agree, contradict, ask), and at the end summarise – this is required: “Wir sind uns also einig, dass …, aber bei … sehen wir das unterschiedlich.” You do not need to agree with your partner.
Strategy for each part: telc B2 Mündlicher Ausdruck
Teil 1 – Über Erfahrungen sprechen
This is your chance to prepare at home. Choose your topic from the list of seven and prepare a 1.5-minute talk: a short introduction, a concrete experience (when, where, what happened), what you learned or how you feel about it now. Practise it out loud until it fits the time, but speak from key words. After the monologue you answer questions, so think about what people might want to know – and listen to your partner’s talk with real interest.
Trap: a talk that is too general (“Reisen ist wichtig, weil man viel lernt”). The task is about experience – tell a story with details and the Perfekt/Präteritum.
Teil 2 – Diskussion
- During preparation, note the text’s two or three main arguments in your own words.
- In the exam, summarise briefly: “Im Text geht es um … Der Autor vertritt die Meinung, dass …”
- Give your opinion, then discuss with your partner. Both of you should speak about equally.
Teil 3 – Gemeinsam etwas planen
You plan something together, e.g. a farewell party for a colleague or a weekend trip for your course. Make suggestions, react to your partner’s ideas, and reach an agreement at the end. Cover the points on the task sheet, but the real goal is negotiation: “Das ist eine gute Idee, aber wie wäre es, wenn wir …?”

Sample tasks and models
Goethe Teil 1 – sample Vortrag
Outline in key words, as you would write it in the preparation time:
- Einleitung: Thema seit der Pandemie aktuell; Aufbau ankündigen
- Formen: komplett von zu Hause, hybrid (2–3 Tage Büro), Coworking
- Hybrid genauer: Beispiel Freundin, Teamtage dienstags/donnerstags
- Vorteile: kein Pendeln, Flexibilität; Nachteile: Isolation, Grenze Arbeit/Freizeit
- Meinung + Schluss: hybrid = guter Kompromiss
telc Teil 3 – sample planning dialogue
Task: Ihr Deutschkurs endet.
A: Grundsätzlich eine schöne Idee.
Why this works: suggestions in different forms, a polite objection with a reason, a compromise, a question to the partner, and a summary of the agreement at the end.
Goethe Teil 2 – discussion starter
Question: „Sollten Supermärkte unverkaufte Lebensmittel verschenken müssen?“ A good opening: “Ich bin grundsätzlich dafür, weil jedes Jahr riesige Mengen Lebensmittel im Müll landen. Allerdings frage ich mich, wer die Verteilung organisieren soll. Wie siehst du das?” – a position, a reason, a doubt and a question to the partner in four sentences.
Common mistakes at B2 – and how to fix them
- Reading from notes. Examiners score free speaking. Write key words only and look at your partner.
- Monologues in the discussion. After two or three sentences, hand over with a question.
- Not reacting to the partner. Refer to what they said: “Du hast gerade gesagt, dass … Da bin ich nicht sicher.”
- No summary or agreement. Goethe Teil 2 needs a summary; telc Teil 3 needs a plan you both accept.
- Silence when you lose a word. Paraphrase: “Wie sagt man … – das Ding, mit dem man …”
Weekly practice plan
- Monday: record a 3-minute Vortrag from key words; listen back and note three improvements.
- Tuesday: learn ten discussion phrases and use each in a sentence.
- Wednesday: discuss a controversial question with a partner for 5 minutes (online tandem works).
- Thursday: telc: practise your Teil 1 topic until it fits 1.5 minutes.
- Friday: planning role play (party, trip, event) with a partner.
