German A2 Clothes and Shopping: Adjective Endings and Comparison

Learn · Practice · Improve

Shopping for clothes is a perfect everyday situation to practise German: you describe things, ask for sizes and colours, and compare prices. In this German A2 lesson you learn clothes vocabulary, adjective endings after the definite and indefinite article (nominative and accusative), and the comparative and superlative – all key grammar for the A2 exam.

What you will be able to do

  • I can name clothes, colours and sizes and ask for them in a shop.
  • I can describe clothes with adjectives and the correct endings (ein schwarzer Mantel, den blauen Pullover).
  • I can compare things with the comparative and als / so
 wie.
  • I can say what is the best, cheapest or most comfortable with the superlative.
  • I can understand short shop ads and choose the right offer.

Key vocabulary

Learn clothes with article and plural – the article decides the adjective ending. Learn adjectives in threes: billig – billiger – am billigsten.

Grammar: adjective endings and comparison

When an adjective stands after the noun (Der Mantel ist warm.), it has no ending. When it stands before the noun, it needs an ending. At A2 you need the endings in the nominative (subject) and the accusative (direct object).

After the definite article (der, die, das)

Casemasculinefeminineneuterplural
Nominativeder neue Rockdie neue Jackedas neue Hemddie neuen Schuhe
Accusativeden neuen Rockdie neue Jackedas neue Hemddie neuen Schuhe

After der/die/das the ending is -e in five places and -en everywhere else (masculine accusative and all plurals). The same endings are used after dieser, diese, dieses and welcher, welche, welches.

After the indefinite article (ein, eine, kein, mein
)

Casemasculinefeminineneuterplural
Nominativeein neuer Rockeine neue Jackeein neues Hemdkeine neuen Schuhe
Accusativeeinen neuen Rockeine neue Jackeein neues Hemdkeine neuen Schuhe

The word ein does not show if a noun is masculine or neuter, so the adjective shows it: ein neuer Rock (like der), ein neues Hemd (like das). In the plural without any article, the ending is -e: Ich brauche neue Schuhe.

Comparative and superlative

Comparative: adjective + -er, then als (than). Superlative: am + adjective + -sten. Many short adjectives with a, o, u get an umlaut. Adjectives ending in -t, -d, -s, -ß or -z add an extra -e- in the superlative (am Ă€ltesten, am kĂŒrzesten). To say two things are equal, use so
 wie.

AdjectiveComparativeSuperlative
billigbilligeram billigsten
schönschöneram schönsten
warmwÀrmeram wÀrmsten
langlÀngeram lÀngsten
kurzkĂŒrzeram kĂŒrzesten
altÀlteram Àltesten
teuerteureram teuersten
gutbesseram besten
vielmehram meisten
gernlieberam liebsten

Rule to remember: after der/die/das use -e (nominative singular, feminine/neuter accusative) or -en (everything else); after ein the adjective shows the gender: -er (m), -e (f), -es (n).

After a comparative, use als. Use wie only with so
 wie (equal).

Typical mistake: ✗ Ich kaufe einen schwarzer Mantel. → ✓ Ich kaufe einen schwarzen Mantel. In the masculine accusative, the ending is always -en.

Dialogue: in a clothes shop

Was kostet er?

VerkÀuferin: 129 Euro. Er ist teurer als die Jacke, aber die QualitÀt ist sehr gut.

Frau LĂłpez: Gut, ich nehme den langen Mantel. Kann ich mit Karte zahlen?

VerkĂ€uferin: Ja, natĂŒrlich. Die Kasse ist gleich hier vorne.

Gist: Frau López wants a winter jacket but buys a long coat because the jacket is too tight. Glossary: dunkel = dark, die QualitÀt = quality, gleich hier vorne = right here at the front.

Memory tricks

  • The “-e shape”: draw the nominative/accusative table for der/die/das. The five -e endings form one block: the three singular nominative forms plus the feminine and neuter accusative just below them. Only the masculine accusative and the plural column are outside the block – they take -en.
  • “Ein is shy, so the adjective speaks up”: ein hides the gender, so the adjective takes the last letter of the definite article: der → ein neuer, das → ein neues.
  • Masculine accusative is always “-en, -en”: den neuen Rock, einen neuen Rock. Two -en, like two shoes.
  • English helps with comparison: cheap – cheaper – cheapest = billig – billiger – am billigsten; good – better – best = gut – besser – am besten.
  • als or wie? Different = als, same = wie. Remember: “als = anders” (different).
  • Mini-story to link words: Im Winter trage ich einen warmen Mantel, eine dicke Hose und bequeme Schuhe – am liebsten in Schwarz.
