Writing at C2 means more than avoiding mistakes. Examiners expect precise, stylistically flexible German that fits the text type exactly. This guide covers Goethe C2 Schreiben (text revision plus a free text of about 350 words) and telc Deutsch C2 Schriftlicher Ausdruck (an argumentative essay based on the exam’s texts). You will find a method for each part, Redemittel for formal argument, an annotated model text and a checklist. If you are looking for C2 German writing practice, a Goethe C2 Schreiben example or tips for the telc C2 Erörterung, read on.
telc Deutsch C2 has a second writing task, the summary in Hörverstehen und Schreiben. Because it depends mainly on listening and note-taking, it is covered in the C2 Hören guide.

Goethe C2 Schreiben: strategy for each part
Teil 1: text revision (approx. 20 min, 20 points)
You rewrite marked passages in a more formal or condensed style, using a given word without changing its form. The meaning must stay the same.
- Identify what the given word requires: a preposition with a case (aufgrund + Gen.), a verb with a fixed structure (bedürfen + Gen.), a noun that forces nominalisation.
- Rewrite the whole passage in your head, then check the rest of the sentence: verb position, endings, articles.
- Check that no information has been lost or added.
Example: „Obwohl die Stadt viel investiert hat, ist der Bahnhof weiterhin unattraktiv.“ (trotz) → „Trotz der hohen Investitionen der Stadt ist der Bahnhof weiterhin unattraktiv.“
Typical trap: changing the given word (writing trotzdem instead of trotz), or forgetting the knock-on change, such as the verb moving to second position once a subordinate clause becomes a prepositional phrase. Partial answers can still earn 1 point, so always write something.
Teil 2: free text, approx. 350 words (approx. 60 min, 80 points)
- Choose wisely (3 min). Choose the literature topics only if you know a title from the current official reading list well. Otherwise choose one of the general topics.
- Plan (10 min). Put the three content aspects into a logical order and decide on your main thesis. Note two or three precise words or idioms for each aspect.
- Write (35–40 min). Introduction, three body paragraphs (one per aspect, or combined logically), conclusion. Use the register of the text type: a reader’s letter refers to the article, an e-mail to a known person can be more personal, a review evaluates.
- Revise (7–10 min). Check the three aspects, then grammar, then repetition of words.
Typical trap: writing far more than 350 words. Length does not earn points, and long texts tend to contain more mistakes and less time for checking.
telc C2 Schriftlicher Ausdruck: strategy
- Read the three topics (5 min). Choose the one for which you can use the most material from the reading and listening texts.
- Collect sources (10 min). Go back to the reading texts and your listening notes. Note at least three sources, each with a position or quotation, and mark which side it supports.
- Outline (10 min). For an Erörterung: introduction, arguments for, arguments against, weighing up, conclusion. For a Stellungnahme: your thesis, supporting arguments, refutation of counter-arguments, conclusion.
- Write (50 min). Integrate sources with clear markers: „Wie es im Lexikonartikel heißt, …“, „Die Referentin vertritt die Auffassung, …“. Put direct quotations in quotation marks.
- Proofread (15 min). Correctness and range each count for a quarter of the score.
Typical trap: presenting a source’s view as your own. The task explicitly requires you to mark other people’s opinions, and Aufgabengerechtheit suffers if you do not.

B. Sample task (Goethe Teil 2 style)
In einer Zeitschrift lesen Sie einen Artikel mit dem Titel „Die autofreie Innenstadt – Vision oder Zumutung?“. Schreiben Sie einen Leserbrief (circa 350 Wörter). Gehen Sie dabei auf folgende Aspekte ein:
- Folgen für Handel und Gastronomie
- Lebensqualität der Anwohner
- Ihr eigener Vorschlag für eine Lösung
Annotated model text
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
mit Ihrem Artikel „Die autofreie Innenstadt – Vision oder Zumutung?“ haben Sie eine Debatte aufgegriffen, die in meiner Heimatstadt seit Monaten die Gemüter erhitzt. Gestatten Sie mir, die Diskussion um einige Gesichtspunkte zu ergänzen, die mir in Ihrem Beitrag zu kurz gekommen sind.
Note: refers directly to the article (title quoted), states the purpose. Formal register fits a reader’s letter.
Note: aspect 1. Concedes the opposing view (nachvollziehbar, jedoch), argues against it, then adds a nuance (Gleichwohl). Reported speech with blieben: Konjunktiv II replaces Konjunktiv I here because sie bleiben would look like the indicative.
Note: aspect 2. Varied structure (Was … betrifft, liegen … auf der Hand), a balanced counterpoint and a pointed final sentence (ebenso wenig … wie).
Note: aspect 3. A concrete proposal with several measures; idiom vor vollendete Tatsachen stellen shows C2 range.
Die autofreie Innenstadt ist meines Erachtens weder bloße Vision noch Zumutung, sondern eine Gestaltungsaufgabe, die Geduld und Fingerspitzengefühl erfordert. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Ihre Zeitschrift die Debatte weiterhin so differenziert begleitete.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Alex Berger
Note: the conclusion takes up the title of the article and answers it with a differentiated position (weder … noch …, sondern …). Length: about 350 words including salutation and closing.
Checklist before you hand in
- Have I covered all three content aspects (Goethe) or used at least three marked sources (telc)?
- Does the text type fit: salutation and closing for letters and e-mails, evaluation for reviews, a clear thesis for an essay?
- Is there a logical structure with paragraphs and connectors that go beyond und, aber, deshalb?
- Have I used a range of structures: nominal style, Konjunktiv I and II, passive alternatives, participial attributes?
- Have I checked verb position, case endings, adjective endings and comma placement?
- Have I avoided repeating the same key word more than twice?
- Goethe: is the text roughly 350 words? telc: is it complete and balanced within 90 minutes?
Common mistakes at C2 and how to fix them
- Wrong case after formal prepositions. *aufgrund dem Wetter → aufgrund des Wetters.
- Mixed registers. *Das ist doch total daneben in a formal essay → Das halte ich für verfehlt.
- Konjunktiv I errors in reported speech. *Die Autorin sagt, die Mieten sind zu hoch. → Die Autorin sagt, die Mieten seien zu hoch.
- Anglicised collocations. *eine Entscheidung machen → eine Entscheidung treffen; *Sinn machen is widely used but sinnvoll sein / Sinn ergeben is safer in formal writing.
- Overlong sentence chains. Three nested subordinate clauses are not a sign of C2 but often of lost control. Fix: one main idea per sentence, then link with connectors.
- Unmarked sources (telc). Fix: „Im Hörtext wird betont, …“, „Wie es im zweiten Lesetext heißt, …“.
- Missing comma before infinitive clauses with zu when introduced by um, ohne, statt: Er sprach, ohne zu zögern.
Weekly practice plan
