Frequently asked questions
How many words do I need for German A1?
There is no single official number, because the exams test what you can do with the language, not a fixed word count. This list gives you the 1000 most useful words that are typically new at A1. Words from lower levels are not repeated, so together with the lists for the levels below you get about 1000 words – a solid vocabulary for the A1 exams.
Is this the official Goethe or telc word list?
No. It is an independent list written by HowToLearnGerman.online. The Goethe-Institut publishes official German-only word lists for its lower levels on its website. Our list adds English meanings, articles, plurals, verb forms, example sentences and a study plan, and it also covers B2, C1 and C2. It is useful for Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1, telc Deutsch A1 and ÖSD Zertifikat A1.
How do I learn 1000 German words quickly?
Learn 50 words a day for 20 days. Always learn nouns with their article and plural, say each word aloud in its example sentence, and review every block after 1, 3 and 7 days (spaced repetition). The PDF contains this 20-day plan, a progress tracker, quick checks after every topic and a final test with answers.
How do I import the list into Anki or Quizlet?
Download the CSV file. In Anki choose File → Import, select the file and map the columns (German, English, example). In Quizlet create a new set, choose "Import" and paste the German and English columns. The file is UTF-8 encoded, so umlauts and ß display correctly.
Can I print and share the PDF?
Yes. The PDF is free to print and share for learning and teaching, for example in your German class. Please do not sell it or remove the source.
Independent learning material by HowToLearnGerman.online – not an official word list of the Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD.
