At C1, reading is less about understanding words and more about understanding arguments: how a commentary builds its case, where an author concedes a point, which sentence logically belongs in a gap. This guide covers the Goethe C1 Lesen module and the telc C1 Leseverstehen including the telc C1 Sprachbausteine, the grammar-and-vocabulary section that shares the same time block. You will find a strategy for every Teil, the connectors that unlock gap tasks, a short C1 reading practice set and German C1 reading exam tips for managing your time.
What the exam looks like
| Goethe-Zertifikat C1 – Lesen | telc Deutsch C1 – Leseverstehen + Sprachbausteine | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 65 min | 90 min for both sections together (approx. 20 min recommended for Sprachbausteine) |
| Items | 30 items in 4 Teile | Leseverstehen: 24 items in 4 Teile; Sprachbausteine: 22 gaps |
| Teil 1 | Popular-science article with 8 gaps; multiple choice a/b/c/d per gap (approx. 10 min) | Textrekonstruktion: 6 gaps, insert sentences from a–h (2 left over) |
| Teil 2 | Information-dense magazine or internet article; 7 multiple-choice items a/b/c (approx. 20 min) | Selektives Verstehen: 6 questions matched to paragraphs a–e; a paragraph can fit several questions |
| Teil 3 | Press commentary or reportage with 8 gaps; insert sentences, the remaining sentences are distractors (approx. 20 min) | Detailverstehen: one longer text, 11 items richtig / falsch / im Text nicht enthalten |
| Teil 4 | 3 short expert texts; match 7 statements to a text or “0” (fits no text) (approx. 15 min) | Globalverstehen: 1 item – choose the heading or overall message of the whole text |
| Language section | – (no separate grammar section) | Sprachbausteine: 1 gapped text, 22 gaps, multiple choice a/b/c/d (grammar and vocabulary) |
| Scoring | 1 point per item × 3.33 = max. 100; module passed with 60 | Leseverstehen: 2 points per item = 48; Sprachbausteine: 1 point per gap = 22 |
Interestingly, Goethe Lesen Teil 1 is close to a Sprachbausteine task: you choose words for gaps in a text. So the language strategies below help in both exams.
Strategy for each part – Goethe C1
Teil 1: Gapped article, a/b/c/d (about 10 minutes)
- Read the sentence with the gap and the next sentence. Many gaps test a connector or a fixed collocation whose logic only becomes clear later.
- Check grammar first: case after a preposition, verb position after a conjunction, the preposition a verb requires (beitragen zu, verzichten auf, abhängen von).
- Then check meaning: two options are often grammatically possible, only one fits the logic.
Trap: „___ seiner Erfahrung wurde er nicht eingestellt.” Wegen, trotz and aufgrund are all grammatical. Only the context decides: if the text has just praised his experience as an asset, the answer is trotz; if it said employers fear overqualified staff, it is wegen or aufgrund – and then the exam would offer only one of them.
Teil 2: Long article, multiple choice (about 20 minutes)
- Read the questions first; they follow the order of the text.
- Locate the relevant paragraph, then read it in detail. Do not answer from memory of a quick skim.
- Eliminate options: one is usually contradicted, one is a half-truth (right topic, wrong detail).
Trap: an option says „Die Studie beweist, dass …” while the text says „Die Studie deutet darauf hin, dass …”. At C1, the degree of certainty matters.
Teil 3: Commentary with sentence insertion (about 20 minutes)
- Read the whole text once quickly to grasp the author’s line of argument.
- For each sentence a–j, mark its “hooks”: pronouns (dieser, solche, dabei), connectors (dennoch, zudem) and repeated nouns.
- Fill the gaps where the hooks are clearest first; leave the hardest for the end, when fewer options remain.
- Re-read the paragraph with your sentence in it: does the pronoun refer to something that is actually mentioned just before?
Trap: a sentence starting „Doch genau das ist das Problem.” fits only after a sentence describing a solution or expectation – not after another criticism.
Teil 4: Three expert texts, matching with “0” (about 15 minutes)
- Read the three texts quickly and note each author’s main position in three or four words.
- For each statement, scan for the specific idea, not the topic – all three texts share the topic.
- Use “0” with confidence: some statements deliberately match no text. If a statement is only half covered by a text, it does not match.
Strategy for each part – telc C1
Time plan for the 90-minute block: Teil 1 about 15 min, Teil 2 about 15 min, Teil 3 about 25 min, Teil 4 about 10 min, Sprachbausteine about 20 min, plus 5 min to check the answer sheet. Some candidates prefer to do the Sprachbausteine first while they are fresh – try both in mock exams.
Teil 1: Textrekonstruktion
- Same method as Goethe Teil 3: identify reference words and connectors in sentences a–h.
- Two sentences are left over. They often match the topic but break the logic (e.g. a pronoun with no referent).
Teil 2: Selektives Verstehen
- Read the six questions and underline the key idea in each.
- Skim each paragraph a–e and write a short label in the margin.
- Match – and remember that one paragraph may answer several questions, while another may answer none. Do not eliminate a paragraph after using it.
Teil 3: Detailverstehen – richtig / falsch / nicht enthalten
- Statements follow the text. Find the exact passage before deciding.
- falsch = the text says the opposite or something incompatible; nicht enthalten = the text says nothing about this specific claim.
- Watch out for quantifiers and modality: „alle” vs. „viele”, „muss” vs. „kann”.
Teil 4: Globalverstehen
- Choose the option that covers the whole text, not just one paragraph.
- Typical distractors are too narrow (one detail) or too strong (the text is more cautious).
- Do this part last if time is short – it is one item, worth 2 points.
Sprachbausteine: 22 gaps, a/b/c/d
- Read the whole sentence before choosing; the decisive word is often after the gap (e.g. the verb at the end: „…, ___ er die Aufgabe übernommen hatte” → nachdem, not nach).
- Typical targets: prepositions with verbs and nouns (Interesse an, Einfluss auf), connectors (obwohl / trotzdem / trotz), relative pronouns (dessen, deren), noun-verb collocations (eine Entscheidung treffen, Kritik üben), adjective endings and passive forms.
- Do not spend more than a minute on one gap. Mark a guess and return if time remains.

Practice set
A. Sprachbausteine-style gaps (also good practice for Goethe Teil 1). Choose a, b, c or d.
- a) Trotz b) Wegen c) Obwohl d) Statt
- a) dazu b) darauf c) damit d) davon
- a) Wenn b) Als c) Ob d) Nachdem
- a) mangelt b) bedarf c) benötigt d) gibt
- a) nimmt b) spielt c) macht d) trägt
Answer key
- a) Trotz – takes the genitive (zahlreicher Förderprogramme) and expresses the contrast. Obwohl would need a clause.
- b) darauf – etwas auf etwas zurückführen.
- a) Wenn – general condition in the present. Als is for a single event in the past; nachdem would need a perfect tense.
- a) mangelt – es mangelt an + Dat. (bedarf takes the genitive without an).
- b) spielt – eine Rolle spielen.
- c) in – jemanden in etwas einbinden.
- falsch – the idea comes from North America.
- nicht enthalten – costs are not mentioned.
- richtig – critics point out missing trained staff and storage space.
Common mistakes at C1
- Matching by keyword. The right answer is usually a paraphrase; the distractor repeats words from the text. Correct: compare meaning, not vocabulary.
- Confusing “falsch” and “nicht enthalten”. Correct: “falsch” needs a contradicting passage you can point to.
- Ignoring hedging. „könnte”, „gilt als”, „angeblich” make a claim uncertain. An option that states it as fact is wrong.
- Mixing up trotz / obwohl / trotzdem. Correct: trotz des Regens (preposition), obwohl es regnet (subordinate clause), Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir. (adverb, verb second).
- Wrong verb preposition. *Ich interessiere mich über … → für; *Das hängt an der Situation ab → von der Situation.
- Spending too long on one Teil. In the telc block especially, Sprachbausteine are often rushed at the end. Correct: set yourself fixed checkpoints.
- Forgetting to transfer answers. Only the answer sheet counts.
Weekly practice plan
| Day | Task (30–45 min) |
|---|---|
| Mon | One commentary from a quality newspaper: underline every connector and note its function. |
| Tue | Sentence insertion practice: cut five sentences out of an article, shuffle them, reinsert them a day later. |
| Wed | Sprachbausteine / Goethe Teil 1: 20 gaps, then learn all verb-preposition pairs you got wrong. |
| Thu | Popular-science article: write three true, three false and three not-mentioned statements. |
| Fri | One full reading module from a mock exam, strictly timed. |
| Weekend | Error review and a vocabulary list of collocations (Kritik üben, Bedenken äußern, Maßnahmen ergreifen). |

FAQ
How many points do I need to pass Goethe C1 Lesen?
Each Goethe C1 module is scored out of 100 points, and you pass a module with 60. In Lesen, each of the 30 items gives 1 raw point, multiplied by 3.33 – roughly 18 correct answers are needed.
What are the Sprachbausteine in the telc C1?
A gapped text with 22 gaps, each with four options (a–d), testing grammar and vocabulary. It is worth 22 points and is done in the same 90-minute block as the Leseverstehen; about 20 minutes is a sensible share.
How many points do I need to pass the telc C1 reading section?
There is no separate pass mark for reading. You need at least 128 of 214 points overall and 60 % in both the written part (99 points) and the oral part (29 points). Leseverstehen (48) and Sprachbausteine (22) count towards the written part. Check the current rules with telc or your test centre.
Is there a Sprachbausteine section in the Goethe C1?
No. But Goethe Lesen Teil 1 – an article with eight gaps and four options each – trains very similar skills: connectors, prepositions and collocations.
