Moving into a new flat in a German-speaking country means talking about rooms, furniture and where everything goes. In this German A2 lesson you learn the vocabulary for flats and furniture and the two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen) with stellen/stehen, legen/liegen and hängen, a classic topic in the A2 exam and in everyday life.
What you will be able to do
- I can name rooms and common furniture in a flat.
- I can say where things are (Wo?) and where I put them (Wohin?).
- I can use the two-way prepositions with the dative and the accusative correctly.
- I can ask a friend for help with moving and give simple instructions.
- I can understand short flat advertisements and choose a suitable one.

Grammar: two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)
Nine prepositions can take the dative or the accusative: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen. Ask yourself one question. Wo? (where – a position, no change of place) → dative. Wohin? (where to – a movement to a new place) → accusative.
The verb pairs help you: stellen, legen, hängen (hat gehängt) describe an action, a movement to a place → Wohin? + accusative. stehen, liegen, hängen (hat gehangen) describe a position → Wo? + dative.
| Gender | Wohin? (accusative) | Wo? (dative) |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | auf den Tisch / einen Tisch | auf dem Tisch / einem Tisch |
| feminine | an die Wand / eine Wand | an der Wand / einer Wand |
| neuter | in das (= ins) Regal / ein Regal | in dem (= im) Regal / einem Regal |
| plural | zwischen die Stühle | zwischen den Stühlen |
Action verb or position verb?
| Action: Wohin? + accusative | Position: Wo? + dative |
|---|---|
| Ich stelle die Flasche in den Kühlschrank. | Die Flasche steht im Kühlschrank. |
| Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. | Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. |
| Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. | Das Bild hängt an der Wand. |
Short forms you hear all the time: in dem → im, an dem → am, in das → ins, an das → ans. Use stellen/stehen for things that stand upright (bottles, furniture, books standing on a shelf) and legen/liegen for things that lie flat (a phone, a carpet, a book on a table).
Rule to remember: Wohin?
For a position, use the state verb liegen, not legen.
Dialogue: moving day
Jonas: Puh, fertig! Die Wohnung sieht schon toll aus.
Sara: Danke für deine Hilfe! Jetzt bestelle ich uns eine Pizza.
Gist: Jonas helps Sara furnish her new flat. Glossary: eigentlich = actually, by the way; Gefunden! = Found it!; bestellen = to order.
Memory tricks
- “Wohin – Akkusativ, Wo – Dativ“: the longer question word (Wohin) goes with the case that has more movement. Or think: Wohin = “going into a new place”.
- Action verbs are regular, state verbs are irregular: stellen – gestellt, legen – gelegt, hängen – gehängt versus stehen – gestanden, liegen – gelegen, hängen – gehangen. The person does the work (regular), the object just stays there (irregular).
- English bridges: legen = lay, liegen = lie, stellen sounds like “install”. You install something in its place, then it steht there.
- Learn the nine prepositions as a little picture around a box: a cat sits auf the box, unter it, in it, neben it, vor it, hinter it, über it, an it and zwischen two boxes.
- Article change in the dative: der → dem, das → dem, die → der. A short chant: “der and das become dem, die becomes der.”
- Upright or flat? Stand the object in your mind. If it stands on its “feet” (bottle, chair, shelf) use stellen/stehen; if it lies on its “back” (phone, towel, carpet) use legen/liegen.

Choose the correct answer. Think first: Wo? or Wohin?
What is the article of Schrank?
It is der Schrank, plural die Schränke.
Complete: Ich stelle die Vase auf ___ Tisch.
stellen is an action (Wohin?), so accusative: der Tisch → den Tisch. dem would be the dative (Wo?).
Complete: Das Buch liegt auf ___ Regal.
liegen describes a position (Wo?), so dative: das Regal → dem Regal.
What is the plural of der Stuhl?
The plural is die Stühle (umlaut + -e). The -n is only added in the dative plural: auf den Stühlen.
Complete: Die Flasche ___ im Kühlschrank.
im Kühlschrank is a position (dative), and a bottle stands upright, so steht. legt and stellt are action verbs and need a person who does something.
„Wohin hast du den Schlüssel gelegt?“ Which answer is correct?
A Wohin? question needs the accusative in the answer: auf den Tisch.
Complete: Wir hängen das Bild an ___ Wand.
Here hängen is an action (we hang the picture), so accusative: die Wand → an die Wand. an der Wand would answer Wo?.
Complete with the short form: Die Bücher kommen ___ Regal. (in + das)
in + das = ins. im is in + dem (Wo?), ans is an + das.
Dialogue – richtig or falsch? Der Karton mit der Lampe steht in der Küche.
Sara says: Der Karton steht in der Küche, unter dem Fenster.
Dialogue – richtig or falsch? Das Regal steht im Wohnzimmer.
The shelf is in the bedroom: Ins Regal im Schlafzimmer.
Exam-style (choose the right ad): You need a furnished room for three months (May to July). It must cost 400 euros or less. Which ad fits?
Only c is furnished (möbliert), cheap enough and available for exactly these months. Option a is unfurnished and too expensive; option b is only for at least 12 months. In the exam, check every condition, not only the price.
Complete: Kannst du die Jacke bitte in den Schrank ___?
You hang a jacket in the wardrobe: hängen + accusative (in den Schrank). liegen, stehen, sitzen describe positions and cannot have an object.
