Grammar: the passive (present and Präteritum)
In an active sentence the focus is on the person who does something. In a passive sentence the focus is on the action or on the thing that is affected. Very often we do not know or do not care who does it.
The passive is formed with werden + Partizip II. Werden is conjugated in position 2; the Partizip II goes to the end.
| Present | Präteritum | |
|---|---|---|
| ich | werde gefragt | wurde gefragt |
| du | wirst gefragt | wurdest gefragt |
| er / sie / es | wird gefragt | wurde gefragt |
| wir | werden gefragt | wurden gefragt |
| ihr | werdet gefragt | wurdet gefragt |
| sie / Sie | werden gefragt | wurden gefragt |
From active to passive: the accusative object of the active sentence becomes the subject (nominative) of the passive sentence. The verb agrees with this new subject.
| Active | Passive |
|---|---|
| Die Stadt sammelt den Müll. | Der Müll wird (von der Stadt) gesammelt. |
| Freiwillige pflanzten 100 Bäume. | 100 Bäume wurden (von Freiwilligen) gepflanzt. |
| Man trennt hier das Glas. | Hier wird das Glas getrennt. |
Rule to remember: Passive = werden (position 2) + Partizip II (end); if you want to say who did it, use von + dative.
The passive of an action needs werden, not sein. And after von always use the dative: ✗ von die Stadt → ✓ von der Stadt.
Agent: von + dative
Most passive sentences do not name the agent at all. If you want to name it, use von + dative: vom (= von dem) Bürgermeister, von der Polizei, von den Kindern. Remember the dative plural -n: von den Kindern, von den Nachbarn.
The impersonal subject man is a good alternative to the passive in spoken German: Man trennt den Müll. = Der Müll wird getrennt.
Read: a newspaper report
Gist: 200 volunteers collected 800 kg of rubbish on the bank of the river Elbe. Glossary: der Freiwillige, -n = volunteer; die Vorsitzende = chairwoman; der Recyclinghof = recycling centre.
Memory tricks
- “Something is being done”: in English the passive uses “is/was + past participle”, in German wird/wurde + Partizip II. Think: wird = “is being”, wurde = “was being”.
- Don’t trust the false friend: German wird is not English “will”. Der Müll wird abgeholt = the rubbish is collected (now / regularly).
- The passive sandwich: wird is the top slice (position 2), the Partizip II is the bottom slice (end), everything else is the filling: Der Müll wird jeden Dienstag von der Stadt abgeholt.
- von loves the dative: remember the rhyme “aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu – dative, that’s what they do”.
- Word family Umwelt: die Umwelt → der Umweltschutz → umweltfreundlich → die Umweltverschmutzung. All compounds take the article of the last part: der Schutz → der Umweltschutz.
- Bridge words: die Energie (energy), das Plastik (plastic), recyceln (recycle), die Natur (nature) – almost the same as in English, so learn just the article.
