This German B2 lesson deals with media and public opinion: news, social networks, fake news and press freedom. You learn how to structure an argumentative text such as a forum post or essay (introduction, arguments, counter-arguments, conclusion) and how to link it with connectors like außerdem, folglich, dennoch and hingegen. This is exactly what the writing tasks of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and telc Deutsch B2 ask for.
What you will be able to do
- I can understand opinion texts, comments and forum posts on current media topics.
- I can write a clearly structured forum post or essay that presents arguments and counter-arguments.
- I can link my ideas with connectors and use the correct word order after them.
- I can express, justify and qualify my opinion in a discussion.
- I can evaluate the reliability of news sources.

Grammar: Structuring an argument with connectors
A good B2 argumentative text has a clear structure and uses connectors to show how the ideas relate to each other. Examiners look for both: a logical structure and a variety of correctly used connectors.
1. The structure of a forum post or essay
| Part | Function | Typical language |
|---|---|---|
| Einleitung | introduce the topic, say why it matters, announce your aim | In letzter Zeit wird viel darüber diskutiert, ob … / Dieses Thema betrifft uns alle, denn … |
| Argumente (pro) | present 2–3 reasons with an example | Zunächst einmal … / Außerdem … / Darüber hinaus … / Ein Beispiel dafür ist … |
| Gegenargumente (contra) | present the other side fairly, then weigh it | Dagegen spricht, dass … / Allerdings … / Dennoch … / Andererseits … |
| Schluss | summarise, give your own clear opinion, maybe a suggestion | Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen … / Meiner Meinung nach … / Deshalb schlage ich vor, … |
2. Connectors and word order
Most connectors used in essays are adverbs. In position 1 they are followed directly by the conjugated verb (inversion). A few are conjunctions in position 0, and some introduce a subordinate clause with the verb at the end.
| Function | Adverb (position 1 → verb next) | Position 0 / subordinate clause |
|---|---|---|
| adding a point | außerdem, zudem, darüber hinaus, ferner | und; sowohl … als auch |
| consequence | folglich, deshalb, daher, somit | …, sodass (verb at end) |
| concession / despite | dennoch, trotzdem, allerdings | obwohl (verb at end); aber, doch (position 0) |
| contrast | hingegen, dagegen, andererseits | während, wohingegen (verb at end); aber, sondern |
| reason | nämlich (never in position 1) | denn (position 0); weil, da (verb at end) |
| order / conclusion | zunächst, erstens, zweitens, schließlich, abschließend | – |
Special case hingegen: it is often placed directly after the subject it contrasts, which still counts as position 1: Ältere Menschen lesen Zeitung. Jugendliche hingegen informieren sich online.
Rule to remember: connector adverb in position 1 = verb in position 2, subject after it – Außerdem sind soziale Medien …
→ ✓ Außerdem sind soziale Medien gefährlich. außerdem is an adverb, not a conjunction like und, so it takes position 1 and the verb follows immediately. Also be careful not to mix up trotzdem (adverb, main clause) and obwohl (conjunction, verb at the end).

Gist: Jonas sees real risks for children on social media but rejects a ban because it cannot be controlled and would exclude young people from debates; he prefers media education. Glossary: anfällig für = susceptible to, das Konto = account, in die Pflicht nehmen = to hold responsible.
Memory tricks
- Essay skeleton “E-A-G-S” = “Every Argument Gets Summarised”: Einleitung – Argumente – Gegenargumente – Schluss.
- “ADUSO” connectors (aber, denn, und, sondern, oder) sit in position 0 and change nothing. Everything else that starts a main clause pushes the verb straight after it.
- Traffic-light colours: green = adding (außerdem, zudem, darüber hinaus), yellow = conclusion (folglich, deshalb, somit), red = stop and turn (dennoch, allerdings, hingegen). Mark them in your drafts in these colours to check variety.
- folglich contains folgen (to follow): what follows from it. hingegen contains gegen (against): a contrast. dennoch = “then still” – despite everything.
- Exam habit: in every paragraph use at least one new connector – never start three sentences in a row with the same one.

Choose the correct answer. Questions 10–11 refer to Jonas’s forum post.
What does die Schlagzeile mean?
die Schlagzeile is the big title line of a news article. Source = die Quelle, debate = die Debatte.
What is the plural of der Beitrag?
Umlaut + -e, like der Vertrag – die Verträge.
Soziale Medien verbreiten Informationen schnell. Außerdem ___
außerdem is an adverb in position 1, so the conjugated verb sind comes next, then the subject.
Viele Jugendliche schlafen zu wenig. ___ sind sie in der Schule oft unkonzentriert.
Lack of sleep leads to poor concentration – a consequence: folglich. Obwohl would need the verb at the end, and dennoch/hingegen express contrast.
Ein Verbot hätte durchaus einige Vorteile. ___ halte ich es für den falschen Weg.
The second sentence goes against what you would expect after the first: dennoch (nevertheless). folglich/deshalb would mean the advantages are the reason for rejecting it.
Ältere Menschen lesen oft Zeitung. Jugendliche ___ informieren sich vor allem online.
Two groups are contrasted, and hingegen can stand directly after the subject it contrasts. The other options express addition or consequence.
In which part of an essay does the sentence „Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass …“ belong?
zusammenfassend (in summary) introduces the conclusion, where you sum up and give your final opinion.
Which sentence is the best opening for the Einleitung?
An introduction presents the topic and the question. abschließend belongs to the conclusion, ein weiterer Nachteil to the main part.
___ das Verbot zunächst sinnvoll klingt, ist es in der Praxis kaum umsetzbar.
The verb klingt is at the end of the first clause, so you need a subordinating conjunction: obwohl. Trotzdem, dennoch, allerdings are adverbs and would need the verb right after them.
dagegen spricht (against it speaks) + allerdings (however) clearly signals the other side. The other phrases add a point, draw a conclusion or start the text.
