Five tips for nursing German
- Learn phrases, not single words. “Brauchen Sie Hilfe beim Aufstehen?” is more useful than knowing aufstehen alone.
- Practise the handover out loud. Handovers are fast and full of abbreviations. Rehearse a short, structured handover every day.
- Learn body parts with their articles. For example der Arm, das Bein, die Schulter, der Bauch, das Knie.
- Ask for repetition politely. “Können Sie das bitte noch einmal langsamer sagen?” is professional, not a weakness.
- Prepare for the right exam. Many employers and recognition authorities ask for B1 or B2. Read our German exam comparison to see which certificate fits.

Frequently asked questions
What German level do nurses need?
Requirements depend on the federal state, the recognition authority and the employer. B1 or B2 is common, and B2 is frequently required for full professional recognition in Germany. Confirm the requirement with the authority handling your recognition.
Is there a special German exam for nurses?
Yes. telc offers telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege, which uses nursing situations. Check on telc.net whether it’s accepted for your purpose.
