Listening is the part many learners fear most, because you cannot go back and re-read. This guide covers Goethe B1 Hören (Goethe-Zertifikat B1) and telc B1 Hörverstehen (telc Deutsch B1 / Zertifikat Deutsch). You will see how each listening paper is built, how often each recording is played, a step-by-step method for every Teil, the phrases speakers use to change their minds, a transcript-based exercise and a weekly B1 listening practice plan. If you are searching for German B1 listening exam tips that actually change your score, the most important ones are here: read the tasks before the audio, listen for meaning rather than single words, and know when you only hear a text once.

Strategy for Goethe B1 Hören
Teil 1 – Five short texts (played twice)
- Use the reading time to underline the key information you need: a time, a place, what someone should do.
- First listening: answer both items. Second listening: check, especially the a/b/c item.
- Move on immediately when the next text starts – do not stay stuck.
Trap: numbers and corrections. „Der Termin ist am Dienstag um neun – nein, Entschuldigung, um halb zehn.“ The correct time is 9:30. Listen for nein, Moment, ich meine, doch nicht.
Teil 2 – Monologue (played once)
- You have 60 seconds: read all five questions and the options. Ask yourself what kind of information each question wants.
- The questions follow the order of the talk. If you miss one, let it go and listen for the next.
- Mark your guess immediately; the transfer comes at the end.
Trap: the speaker mentions all three options. „Viele denken, die Führung dauert zwei Stunden. Früher war das auch so. Heute sind wir nach etwa 90 Minuten fertig.“ Only the last information counts.
Teil 3 – Everyday conversation (played once)
Read the seven statements and note who each one is about. Two people talk, so be careful not to confuse what she did with what he did. Example statement: „Lena war schon einmal in dem Restaurant.“ If Lena says „Ich wollte immer mal hin, aber Paul kennt es schon“, the answer is Falsch.
Teil 4 – Radio discussion “Wer sagt was?” (played twice)
- During the reading time, write the names of the moderator and guests in the margin.
- First listening: assign statements whose speaker is obvious. Second listening: fill the gaps.
- Remember that the moderator can also be the answer, especially for statements that summarise or ask.
Trap: one guest repeats another guest’s position to disagree with it: „Frau Kaya sagt, dass Kinder weniger Hausaufgaben brauchen. Das sehe ich anders.“ That speaker is against the statement.
Strategy for telc B1 Hörverstehen
Teil 1 – Globalverstehen (played once only)
This Teil is short but unforgiving: each text is heard only once. Read the five statements carefully during the 30 seconds. Each statement summarises the main message, so listen for the general point, not details. If someone says „Am Ende hat sich der Umzug doch gelohnt, auch wenn es anstrengend war“, the gist is positive.
Teil 2 – Detailverstehen (played twice)
- Use the full minute to read all ten statements. Underline names, numbers and opinions.
- First listening: answer what you can. Second listening: focus only on the items you are unsure about.
- The statements follow the order of the interview.
Trap: the interviewer’s question contains the statement, but the guest’s answer contradicts it. „Sie haben also schon als Kind gern gekocht?“ – „Eigentlich gar nicht. Das kam erst im Studium.“
Teil 3 – Selektives Verstehen (each played twice)
Five short announcements: at a station, on the radio, on an answering machine. You need one specific piece of information per text. Before each recording, decide exactly what you are listening for: a platform, a date, a price. Ignore everything else.

Common mistakes at B1
- Not using the reading time. Correction: read every statement before the audio starts; this is where you win points.
- Choosing the first number you hear. Correction: wait for corrections and the final information.
- Matching words instead of meaning. A statement with „billig“ can match „kostet nicht viel“. Correction: think in synonyms.
- Panicking after a missed item. Correction: guess, then focus on the next question immediately.
- Forgetting which texts are played only once. Correction: Goethe Teile 2 and 3, telc Teil 1 – maximum concentration there.
- Confusing speakers in Goethe Teil 4. Correction: note one key word per speaker during the first listening.
- Running out of time to transfer answers. Correction: at Goethe you have 5 minutes at the end; at telc, mark the answer sheet as instructed and keep it tidy.
