HOW TO LEARN GERMAN

Goethe & telc B1 Schreiben: German B1 Writing Guide

Learn · Practice · Improve

Writing is the skill where good preparation pays off most directly, because you can learn the structure in advance. This guide covers Goethe B1 Schreiben (three tasks: an informal e-mail, a forum post and a short formal message) and telc B1 Schriftlicher Ausdruck (one letter or e-mail with four Leitpunkte). You will find the exact format, a method for each task, ready-to-use Redemittel, an annotated model text and a checklist. If you are searching for a B1 German writing example, a Goethe B1 e-mail template or telc B1 letter tips, everything here is original and built for the real exam tasks.

What the exam looks like

Goethe-Zertifikat B1 – Schreiben telc Deutsch B1 – Schriftlicher Ausdruck
Time 60 minutes 30 minutes
Tasks 3 Aufgaben, no choice 1 task, no choice
Task 1 Informal e-mail to a friend with 3 content points (describe, give reasons, suggest something) – about 80 words, about 20 min Reply to an e-mail or letter (informal in the official practice test); all 4 Leitpunkte must be covered
Task 2 Opinion on a topic in a forum or online guestbook – about 80 words, about 25 min –
Task 3 Short polite or formal message (e.g. to a teacher or boss: apologise, ask, explain) – about 40 words, about 15 min –
Word count About 80 / 80 / 40 No word count stated in the official practice test
Criteria Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Strukturen Aufgabenbewältigung, Kommunikative Gestaltung, Formale Richtigkeit (each A=5, B=3, C=1, D=0; sum × 3)
Points / pass 100 points; pass mark 60 in the module 45 points; pass based on 60 % of the whole written exam (135 of 225)
In both exams the biggest point loss comes from missing a content point. A short, simple text that covers everything scores better than a beautiful text that forgets one Leitpunkt.

Strategy for Goethe B1 Schreiben

Aufgabe 1 – Informal e-mail (about 80 words)

  1. Read the situation and the three points. Number them 1–2–3 on the task sheet.
  2. Write one or two sentences per point, plus greeting, a short opening and a closing.
  3. Use du consistently and an informal greeting: Liebe Mia, / Hallo Ben, – end with Viele Grüße or Liebe Grüße.

Trap: “describe” is not the same as “give a reason”. If the point says „Begründen Sie, warum …“, you need a weil or denn sentence.

Aufgabe 2 – Forum post (about 80 words)

  1. Read the forum question and the example comment (if given). Decide: for, against, or “it depends”.
  2. Structure: your opinion → two reasons or one reason with an example → a short conclusion.
  3. There is no greeting like in a letter. Start directly: „Ich finde, dass …“

Trap: copying the sentences of the example comment. Use your own words and your own experience.

Aufgabe 3 – Formal message (about 40 words)

  1. Use Sie and a formal greeting: Sehr geehrte Frau Weber, / Sehr geehrter Herr Kühn, – end with Mit freundlichen Grüßen.
  2. Do what the task asks in order: e.g. apologise → explain → suggest a new date.
  3. Do not write 80 words here. Use the saved time to check Aufgaben 1 and 2.

Time management

Follow the suggested times: 20 – 25 – 15 minutes. Write directly onto the answer sheet after a quick plan of key words; full drafts usually cost too much time.

Strategy for telc B1 Schriftlicher Ausdruck

  1. Read (3 min): the incoming letter or e-mail and the four Leitpunkte. Underline the question words.
  2. Plan (4 min): one key word per Leitpunkt. Choose a logical order – the order of the points is usually a good one.
  3. Write (18 min): greeting, a reference to the letter you received, a paragraph per Leitpunkt, a closing sentence, a closing formula.
  4. Check (5 min): verb position, endings, capital letters on nouns, du/dich/dir or Sie/Ihnen used consistently.

Trap: a Leitpunkt with two parts, e.g. „Wann und wo?“. If you only answer “when”, the point is incomplete. Another trap is ignoring the letter you are answering: refer to it („Danke für deine E-Mail – toll, dass du …“).

The criterion Kommunikative Gestaltung rewards a text that sounds like a real letter: linked sentences, a natural opening and ending, and suitable register.

Sample task and annotated model text

Task (Goethe-style Aufgabe 1): Sie haben am Wochenende bei einem Stadtfest geholfen. Ein Freund, Lukas, konnte nicht kommen. Schreiben Sie Lukas eine E-Mail: Beschreiben Sie: Was haben Sie gemacht? Begründen Sie: Warum hat es Ihnen (nicht) gefallen? Machen Sie einen Vorschlag für nächstes Jahr. (about 80 words)

Model text:

Lieber Lukas,

Jana

Each paragraph covers one Leitpunkt in the given order, the reply refers to Carla’s message, and the final paragraph contains two clear questions (Bitte um Information).

Yes, for the frame: greetings, openings, closings and connectors. The content must respond to the actual task, or you lose points for task fulfilment.
