When do you get up, when does your work start and what do you do at the weekend? In this German A1 lesson on daily routine and free time you learn to describe your day and your hobbies. You practise the present tense of regular and irregular verbs, separable verbs like aufstehen and the most important rule of German word order: the verb in position 2. These structures appear in almost every A1 speaking and writing task.
What you will be able to do
- I can describe my daily routine from morning to evening.
- I can talk about my hobbies and say what I like doing with gern.
- I can use regular verbs and verbs with a vowel change (fahren â er fĂ€hrt) in the present tense.
- I can use separable verbs (Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.).
- I can start a sentence with a time expression and put the verb in position 2.

Grammar: present tense, separable verbs and verb-second word order
German verbs have different endings for each person. You take the stem (infinitive minus -en: mach-en) and add the ending. The present tense is used for now, for habits and also for the future when a time word is given (Morgen arbeite ich.).
| Pronoun | Ending | machen | arbeiten |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | mache | arbeite |
| du | -st | machst | arbeitest |
| er / sie / es | -t | macht | arbeitet |
| wir | -en | machen | arbeiten |
| ihr | -t | macht | arbeitet |
| sie / Sie | -en | machen | arbeiten |
If the stem ends in -t or -d, add an extra e to make it easy to say: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, er findet. If the stem ends in -s, -Ă, -z, the du-form only adds -t: du heiĂt, du tanzt.
Verbs with a vowel change
Some common verbs change their vowel, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms. All other forms are regular: ich fahre, wir fahren, ihr fahrt.
| Change | Infinitive | du | er / sie / es |
|---|---|---|---|
| a â Ă€ | fahren | fĂ€hrst | fĂ€hrt |
| a â Ă€ | schlafen | schlĂ€fst | schlĂ€ft |
| e â i | sprechen | sprichst | spricht |
| e â i | treffen | triffst | trifft |
| e â i | essen | isst | isst |
| e â i | nehmen | nimmst | nimmt |
| e â ie | lesen | liest | liest |
| e â ie | sehen | siehst | sieht |
Typical mistake: â Er fahrt nach Hause. â â Er fĂ€hrt nach Hause. With er/sie/es and du the vowel changes; ich fahre, wir fahren, ihr fahrt have no umlaut.
Separable verbs
Many everyday verbs have a prefix such as an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, fern-. In a normal sentence the verb part goes to position 2, and the prefix goes to the very end. In the infinitive the prefix stays at the front and carries the stress: AUFstehen, EINkaufen.
| Infinitive | Position 1 | Position 2 (verb) | Middle | End (prefix) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| aufstehen | Ich | stehe | um sieben Uhr | auf. |
| anfangen | Der Kurs | fÀngt | um neun Uhr | an. |
| einkaufen | Wir | kaufen | am Samstag | ein. |
| fernsehen | Er | sieht | am Abend | fern. |
| anrufen | Ich | rufe | meine Mutter | an. |
Typical mistake: â Ich aufstehe um sieben Uhr. â â Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. The prefix separates and goes to the end of the sentence.
Verb in position 2 with time expressions
In a German statement the conjugated verb is always the second element. Position 1 can be the subject, but it can also be a time expression like heute, am Montag, um acht Uhr, dann. If something else is in position 1, the subject moves behind the verb.
| Position 1 | Position 2 (verb) | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Ich | schlafe | am Wochenende lange. |
| Am Wochenende | schlafe | ich lange. |
| Um sieben Uhr | stehe | ich auf. |
| Dann | frĂŒhstĂŒcke | ich. |
| Am Abend | sieht | Felix fern. |
Rule to remember: the verb is always number 2; if a time word comes first, the subject jumps behind the verb: Heute arbeite ich.
- Am Montag arbeite ich bis fĂŒnf Uhr.
- Um halb acht fÀngt der Kurs an.
- Am Nachmittag kauft Felix ein.
- Sara liest gern, aber sie sieht nie fern.
- Am Sonntag schlÀft mein Bruder bis elf Uhr.
- Wann stehst du am Samstag auf?
Typical mistake: â Am Montag ich arbeite. â â Am Montag arbeite ich. Am Montag is position 1, so the verb must come next.
Dialogue: early bird and night owl
Sara: Sag mal, Felix, wie sieht dein Tag aus?
Felix: Ich stehe um sechs Uhr auf. Dann frĂŒhstĂŒcke ich. Um sieben Uhr fĂ€ngt meine Arbeit an.
Sara: So frĂŒh! Und wann hast du frei?
Felix: Um drei Uhr. Am Nachmittag kaufe ich ein oder ich spiele FuĂball.
Sara: Und am Abend?
Felix: Am Abend koche ich und sehe ein bisschen fern. Und du?
Sara: Ich schlafe lange! Ich stehe erst um neun Uhr auf. Meine Arbeit beginnt um elf. Am Abend lese ich gern oder ich treffe Freunde.
Felix: Was machst du am Wochenende?
Sara: Am Samstag schwimme ich, und am Sonntag rufe ich meine Eltern an.
Felix: Ich komme am Samstag mit! Ich schwimme auch gern.
Sara: Super! Bis Samstag!
Gist: Felix gets up early and Sara sleeps late; they plan to go swimming together on Saturday. Wie sieht dein Tag aus? = What does your day look like?; erst = not until; mitkommen = to come along.
Memory tricks
- The verb is the king and always sits on chair number 2. Whoever comes first (a person, a time, dann) takes chair 1, and the subject has to stand behind the king.
- Separable verbs are like a sandwich: verb at the top (position 2), the rest of the sentence in the middle, the prefix as the bottom slice: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
- Vowel change happens only in the du and er/sie/es forms: say du fĂ€hrst â er fĂ€hrt, du liest â er liest, du nimmst â er nimmt as pairs. ich, wir and ihr stay normal.
- Endings rhyme with a simple chant: âe â st â t â en â t â enâ (mache, machst, macht, machen, macht, machen). Tap the table six times as you say it.
- Build your day as a mini-story with dann: Ich stehe auf. Dann frĂŒhstĂŒcke ich. Dann fahre ich zur Arbeit. Every dann forces you to practise verb-subject order.
- Bridge words: schwimmen â swim, kochen â cook, Buch â book, Film â film, Sport â sport, Hobby â hobby. Hobbies are easy to remember.
