Learn · Practice · Improve

Where do you live, and what is your flat like? In this German A1 lesson about home and living you learn the names of rooms and furniture, how to describe a flat with simple adjectives (Das Zimmer ist hell.) and – very important – practical tricks to guess whether a noun is der, die or das and how to form its plural. This helps you to read flat adverts, talk to a landlord and do well in the A1 exam.

What you will be able to do

  • I can name the rooms of a flat and the most important pieces of furniture.
  • I can describe my flat or my room with simple adjectives.
  • I can use patterns to find the gender (der/die/das) and the plural of many nouns.
  • I can refer to things with er, sie, es.
  • I can understand the key information in a short flat advertisement.

Key vocabulary

Use the colours: they help your memory connect each noun with its article. Learn adjectives in pairs of opposites (hell – dunkel).

Grammar: noun gender, plural patterns and adjectives after sein

Every German noun has a gender: masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). The gender of things is often not logical, so you must learn it with the word. But there are helpful patterns. They are not 100% rules, but they are right very often.

PatternGenderExamples
ending -ung, -heit, -keit, -ion, -tätdie (practically always)die Wohnung, die Zeitung, die Information, die Universität
ending -edie (most)die Küche, die Lampe, die Dusche (but: der Name, das Auge)
ending -chen, -leindas (always)das Brötchen, das Mädchen, das Tischlein
verb used as a noundas (always)das Essen, das Wohnen
days, months, seasonsder (always)der Montag, der Mai, der Sommer
people and many devices ending in -erder (often)der Mieter, der Fernseher, der Computer (but: das Zimmer, das Fenster)
compound nounsthe last part decidesdas Schlafzimmer (das Zimmer), die Haustür (die Tür), der Kleiderschrank (der Schrank)

Rule to remember: in a compound noun the last word decides the article: das Wohnzimmer, die Wohnungstür, der Küchentisch.

Plural patterns

German has several plural endings. The article in the plural is always die, whatever the gender in the singular. These six patterns cover most nouns:

Plural endingSingular → pluralTypical for
-eder Tisch → die Tische, der Flur → die Fluremany masculine nouns
¨-eder Stuhl → die Stühle, der Schrank → die Schränkemany masculine nouns with a, o, u
-er / ¨-erdas Bild → die Bilder, das Haus → die Häusermany short neuter nouns
-n / -endie Lampe → die Lampen, die Wohnung → die Wohnungen, das Bett → die Bettenalmost all feminine nouns (and some others, e.g. das Bett)
-sdas Sofa → die Sofas, das Büro → die Büroswords ending in a vowel (not -e), many foreign words
– / ¨das Zimmer → die Zimmer, der Garten → die Gärtenmasculine and neuter nouns ending in -er, -el, -en, -chen

Typical mistake: ✗ drei Zimmern → ✓ drei Zimmer Nouns ending in -er usually add nothing in the plural: das Zimmer – die Zimmer, das Fenster – die Fenster.

Adjectives after sein and pronouns for things

When an adjective comes after sein (or werden, bleiben), it has no ending. It stays exactly as in the dictionary, for all genders and in the plural. You can make it stronger or weaker with sehr (very), ziemlich (quite), zu (too) or nicht (not).

When you talk about a thing again, the pronoun follows the grammatical gender: der Tisch → er, die Lampe → sie, das Bett → es, plural → sie. So a table is “he” in German.

NounPronounAdjective after sein
der BalkonerEr ist groß.
die KüchesieSie ist groß.
das ZimmeresEs ist groß.
die Zimmer (Pl.)sieSie sind groß.

Rule to remember: after sein the adjective has no ending: Das Zimmer ist hell. Die Zimmer sind hell.

  • Das Wohnzimmer ist hell, aber das Bad ist dunkel.
  • Die Wohnung ist sehr schön, aber zu teuer.
  • Wie ist der Schrank? – Er ist alt.
  • Die Küche ist neu. Sie ist modern.
  • Die Stühle sind nicht bequem.

Typical mistake: ✗ Das Zimmer ist helles. → ✓ Das Zimmer ist hell. Endings are only needed when the adjective stands before a noun (ein helles Zimmer), which you will learn at A2.

Dialogue: viewing a flat

Frau Berg: Guten Tag, Herr Okafor. Kommen Sie rein! Das ist die Wohnung.

Herr Okafor: Guten Tag! Oh, der Flur ist schön hell.

Frau Berg: Ja. Hier links ist das Wohnzimmer. Es hat zwei Fenster und einen Balkon.

Herr Okafor: Das Wohnzimmer ist wirklich groß! Und wo ist die Küche?

Frau Berg: Die Küche ist hier. Sie ist klein, aber modern.

Herr Okafor: Wie viele Schlafzimmer hat die Wohnung?

Frau Berg: Zwei. Die Schlafzimmer sind sehr ruhig.

Herr Okafor: Super. Und das Bad?

Frau Berg: Das Bad ist neu. Es hat eine Dusche, aber keine Badewanne.

Herr Okafor: Wie hoch ist die Miete?

Frau Berg: 850 Euro warm.

Herr Okafor: Hm, das ist nicht billig. Aber die Wohnung ist toll!

Gist: Mr Okafor looks at a flat with the landlady, Mrs Berg. wirklich = really; die Dusche = shower; die Badewanne = bathtub; warm (rent) = including heating and other costs.

Memory tricks

  • Colour your home: put a blue sticker (der), a red one (die) and a green one (das) on real objects at home – der Tisch, die Tür, das Fenster. Every time you see the colour, say the article and the noun.
  • “-ung, -heit, -keit: the ladies’ team”: these endings are always die. And -chen makes everything small and neuter, even a girl: das Mädchen.
  • The last word is the boss: in das Schlafzimmer the boss is Zimmer, so the article is das. Learn one base noun and you know the article of many compounds: das Wohnzimmer, das Kinderzimmer, das Badezimmer.
  • Sort the flat by colour: das Zimmer, das Bad, das Fenster (green); die Küche, die Tür, die Lampe (red); der Flur, der Balkon, der Garten (blue). Walk through your own flat and name each place with its article.
  • Opposite pairs stick better: learn hell – dunkel, groß – klein, alt – neu, laut – ruhig, teuer – billig as five pairs and test yourself by saying the opposite.
  • No ending after ist: think of the adjective as “standing alone at the end”, like a word in the dictionary: Das Zimmer ist hell.

Practice questions

Choose the correct answer. Question 12 is in the style of the A1 reading exam (short advertisement, richtig or falsch).

  1. Which article is correct? ___ Küche

die Küche: most nouns ending in -e are feminine.

  2. What is the plural of das Zimmer?

Neuter nouns ending in -er add nothing: die Zimmer. Only the article changes.

  3. Which article does Schlafzimmer have?

In a compound the last part decides: schlafen + das Zimmer → das Schlafzimmer.

  4. Nouns ending in -ung (like Wohnung, Zeitung) always have which article?

The ending -ung is always feminine: die Wohnung, die Zeitung.

  5. Complete: Das Bad ist ___. (new)

After sein an adjective has no ending: Das Bad ist neu.

  6. What is the plural of der Stuhl?

Many short masculine nouns take umlaut + -e: der Stuhl – die Stühle, like der Schrank – die Schränke.

  7. What is the plural of das Haus?

Short neuter nouns often take -er, with umlaut if possible: das Haus – die Häuser.

  8. Complete: Wie ist der Tisch? – ___ ist alt.

der Tisch is masculine, so the pronoun is er – even for a thing.

  9. What is the opposite of hell?

hell (bright) – dunkel (dark). The other pairs are laut – ruhig, klein – groß, teuer – billig.

  10. Dialogue: Die Küche ist groß.

Falsch: Frau Berg says Sie ist klein, aber modern. The living room is big.

  11. Dialogue: Das Bad hat keine Badewanne.

Richtig: Es hat eine Dusche, aber keine Badewanne.

  12. Exam-style task. Read the advertisement:
    Schöne 2-Zimmer-Wohnung, 55 m², Küche, Bad, Balkon, 3. Stock, 690 € warm, frei ab 1. März. Tel. 0761 48 29 33 (ab 18 Uhr)
Statement: Die Wohnung hat drei Zimmer.

Falsch: it is a 2-Zimmer-Wohnung (two rooms). The number 3 belongs to 3. Stock (third floor) – a typical exam trap, so read every number with the word next to it.

Checklist
