Grammar: dative verbs, dative pronouns and wenn-clauses

Dative verbs and pronouns

Some verbs always take a dative object (the answer to Wem? – to whom?). The most important at A2 are gefallen, helfen, gehören, schmecken, and also danken, gratulieren, antworten, passen. With gefallen, schmecken and gehören, the thing is the subject and the person is in the dative: Der Kuchen schmeckt mir. (literally: “The cake tastes good to me”.) If the thing is plural, the verb is plural too: Die Blumen gefallen mir.

NominativeAccusativeDativeExample
ichmichmirDas gefällt mir.
dudichdirKann ich dir helfen?
erihnihmDas Auto gehört ihm.
siesieihrDie Torte schmeckt ihr.
esesihmDas Kind ist müde. Wir helfen ihm.
wirunsunsDie Party hat uns gefallen.
ihreucheuchSchmeckt euch das Essen?
sie / Siesie / Sieihnen / IhnenWie gefällt Ihnen die Stadt?

With nouns, use the dative article: dem Vater, der Mutter, dem Kind, den Freunden (dative plural: noun + -n). Example: Ich helfe meiner Schwester.

Conditions with wenn

wenn means “if” or “whenever”. Like weil and dass, it sends the conjugated verb to the end. If the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb – so you get “verb, comma, verb” in the middle.

OrderExample
main clause + wenn-clauseWir grillen, wenn das Wetter schön ist.
wenn-clause firstWenn das Wetter schön ist, grillen wir.
with a modal verbWenn du Zeit hast, kannst du mir helfen.
with a separable verbWenn alle Gäste zusagen, brauchen wir mehr Stühle.

Rule to remember: gefallen, helfen, gehören and schmecken take the dative (mir, dir, ihm, ihr, uns, euch, ihnen, Ihnen); after wenn the verb goes to the end, and a main clause after it starts with the verb.

  • Dein Kleid gefällt mir sehr gut!
  • Kannst du uns beim Kochen helfen?
  • Die Musikanlage gehört eigentlich seinem Bruder.
  • Die Kekse schmecken den Kindern.
  • Wenn es regnet, feiern wir im Wohnzimmer.
  • Ich freue mich, wenn du kommst.

Typical mistake: ✗ Ich gefalle das Buch. → ✓ Das Buch gefällt mir. The thing you like is the subject; you are the dative mir.

Typical mistake: ✗ Kannst du mich helfen? → ✓ Kannst du mir helfen? helfen always takes the dative.

Dialogue: a birthday invitation

Mia: Hallo, Luca! Am Samstag feiere ich meinen 30. Geburtstag. Ich möchte dich einladen!

Luca: Oh, danke! Ich komme gern. Wo feierst du denn?

Mia: Bei mir im Garten. Wenn das Wetter schön ist, grillen wir. Wenn es regnet, feiern wir im Wohnzimmer.

Luca: Super. Kann ich dir helfen? Soll ich etwas mitbringen?

Mia: Das ist nett! Vielleicht einen Salat? Dein Nudelsalat schmeckt mir immer so gut.

Luca: Kein Problem. Kommt deine Schwester auch?

Mia: Ja, mit ihrem Freund Jan. Er bringt seine Musikanlage mit. Na ja, sie gehört eigentlich seinem Bruder, aber egal!

Luca: Und was möchtest du zum Geburtstag haben?

Mia: Ach, nichts! Wenn du kommst, freue ich mich.

Luca: Das sagst du immer! Ich finde schon etwas. Bücher gefallen dir doch, oder?

Mia: Ja, sehr! Also bis Samstag, um sieben!

Gist: Mia invites Luca to her 30th birthday party; Luca will bring a pasta salad. Glossary: die Musikanlage = sound system, egal = it doesn’t matter, der Nudelsalat = pasta salad.

Memory tricks

  • “Dative loves -m”: the masculine and neuter dative forms end in -m: dem, einem, ihm. And mir and dir rhyme. Say all the pronouns as a rhythm: “mir – dir – ihm – ihr, uns – euch – ihnen“.
  • The four dative friends sit at one party table: gefallen (the music), schmecken (the cake), gehören (the sound system) and helfen (the host). Imagine the party and you will remember all four verbs.
  • Think “to me”: Das gefällt mir = “That is pleasing to me.” Das gehört mir = “That belongs to me.” The English “to” is often a sign of the German dative.
  • Verb, comma, verb: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich. The two verbs meet at the comma like two hands clapping.
  • zusagen and absagen are a pair: zu = towards (yes, I’m coming towards you), ab = away (no, I’m staying away).
  • Mini-story: Wenn Mia Geburtstag hat, helfe ich ihr. Der Kuchen schmeckt mir, die Musik gefällt mir – und das Geschenk gehört ihr!

Practice questions

Choose the correct answer. Ask yourself: Wem? – then choose the dative.

  1. Complete: Das Kleid gefällt ___ . (ich)

gefallen takes the dative: ich → mir. mich is accusative.

  2. Complete: Kannst du ___ beim Umzug helfen? (wir)

The dative of wir is uns (the same as the accusative). euch is for ihr, ihnen for sie (they).

  3. „Wem gehört das Fahrrad?“ – „Es gehört ___ .“ (er)

gehören takes the dative: er → ihm. ihn is accusative.

  4. Complete: ___ du am Samstag Zeit hast, kannst du zur Party kommen.

This is a condition (“if you have time”), so wenn. denn cannot start a sentence with the verb at the end, and dass cannot start this kind of sentence.

  5. Complete: Wenn es regnet, …

When the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause starts with the verb: …, bleiben wir zu Hause (verb, comma, verb).

  6. What is the plural of der Gast?

The plural is die Gäste (umlaut + -e). Gästen is only the dative plural (mit den Gästen).

  7. You are talking to your neighbour, Frau Klein (formal): „Schmeckt ___ der Kuchen, Frau Klein?“

The formal dative of Sie is Ihnen (with a capital I). dir is informal, and Sie is nominative/accusative.

  8. What does absagen mean?

absagen = to say no / to cancel. To accept is zusagen, to invite is einladen.

  9. Dialogue – richtig or falsch? Mias Party ist am Samstag.

Mia says: Am Samstag feiere ich meinen 30. Geburtstag.

  10. Dialogue – richtig or falsch? Die Musikanlage gehört Jan.

Jan brings it, but it belongs to his brother: sie gehört eigentlich seinem Bruder.

  11. Exam-style (reading an e-mail): „Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen, am Freitag, den 14. Juni, feiern wir das 10-jährige Jubiläum unserer Firma. Wir beginnen um 17 Uhr in der Kantine. Es gibt Essen und Getränke. Ihr könnt gern eure Partner mitbringen. Bitte sagt mir bis Mittwoch, ob ihr kommt. Viele Grüße, Sabine“ What should the colleagues do by Wednesday?

Bitte sagt mir bis Mittwoch, ob ihr kommt = please tell me by Wednesday if you are coming. Food is provided (Es gibt Essen und Getränke), and partners are welcome but not required.

  12. Complete: Wenn ich Zeit ___, spiele ich Tennis.

The subject ich is already there, and the verb habe goes to the end of the wenn-clause.
