What A2 means in practice

At A2 you can talk about your background, your daily routine, your work or school and your plans in simple sentences. You understand the main point of short, clear messages, announcements and simple articles. Compared with A1, the exam expects you to connect sentences with und, aber, oder, denn, weil, dass, use the past tense (Perfekt and war/hatte), and make plans with another person. Revise these topics in our A2 course and learn the words in the A2 vocabulary list.

Lesen (Reading) – 30 minutes

The reading part focuses on simple newspaper-style and everyday texts. It tests both global understanding (what is the text about?) and detailed understanding (what exactly does it say?).

Task types

Strategy step by step

  1. Task 1: read each text once quickly and write its topic in two or three words in the margin. Then compare your notes with the headings.
  2. Be careful with headings that use a word from the text but have a different topic. A good heading matches the main idea, not only one word.
  3. Task 2: read the questions first. The questions usually follow the order of the text.
  4. Find the part of the text that answers each question and read it slowly. Compare all three options with that sentence.
  5. Plan about 12 minutes for Task 1, 15 minutes for Task 2 and 3 minutes to check.

Typical traps

Hören (Listening) – about 15 minutes

You hear simple radio texts, voice messages and short interviews in standard German from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. You tick answers or write short notes.

Task types

Strategy step by step

  1. Use the reading time before each task. Underline key words in every statement.
  2. For the message, predict the gaps: a time (um …), a place (in der/im …), an object (mitbringen: …).
  3. Write short notes, not full sentences. Spelling mistakes in normal words are less important than getting the information right.
  4. In the interviews, listen for each speaker’s name and then focus only on that person’s answer.

Typical traps

Schreiben (Writing) – 30 minutes

You get a personal e-mail from a friend and write a reply. The task shows several guiding questions, and you must write something about each one. Your text is assessed for task fulfilment, coherence, vocabulary and grammar, and there is a length requirement: in the official scoring, texts under 40 words lose points, and very short texts fail. Aim for 50–70 words.

Strategy step by step

  1. Read the friend’s e-mail and the guiding questions. Number them in the margin.
  2. Plan one to three sentences per question (3 minutes).
  3. Write: greeting – thanks or reaction – answers to all questions – a question back or a nice ending – closing.
  4. Use connectors: denn, weil, aber, deshalb, zuerst, danach.
  5. Keep 5 minutes to check verbs (position and endings), capital letters, du/dein forms and the word count.

Typical traps

Sprechen (Speaking) – about 10 minutes

The A2 speaking test can be a pair exam (with another candidate) or an individual exam (with an examiner as your partner). You get 10 minutes of preparation. You may use your short notes during the test.

Task 1 – Talking about yourself

You get a card with six topics and choose five of them, for example home, work or school, free time, food, holidays and family. You say a few sentences about each one, and your partner or the examiner asks you questions. Then you ask your partner questions.

Task 2 – Planning something together

You and your partner plan a joint activity, for example a trip, a party or a visit. A worksheet gives you points to discuss: when, where, what to bring, who does what. You must make suggestions, react to your partner’s ideas and agree on a plan.

Strategy step by step

  1. Before the exam, prepare three or four sentences for every common topic, including one sentence in the past (Letzten Sommer bin ich …).
  2. In the preparation time, write key words for Task 1 and two suggestions for each point in Task 2.
  3. In Task 2, follow a simple pattern: suggest – react – agree. “Wollen wir …? – Gute Idee! / Hm, lieber … – Okay, dann machen wir das so.“
  4. Give your partner space. Ask: Was meinst du? Hast du eine Idee?
  5. Close the planning with a summary: Also: Wir treffen uns am Samstag um zehn …

Typical traps

3. Jeden Freitag gibt es jetzt auf dem Hauptplatz einen Bauernmarkt. Familien aus der Region verkaufen Obst, Gemüse, Käse und Eier.

Writing practice – E-mail to a friend (30 minutes)

Ihre Freundin Julia schreibt: „Hallo! Ich habe gehört, du bist umgezogen! Wie ist die neue Wohnung? Wie sind die Nachbarn? Was gefällt dir in der neuen Stadt noch nicht so gut? Und wann kann ich dich besuchen?“

Schreiben Sie Julia eine Antwort. Schreiben Sie etwas zu allen vier Fragen.

Answer key

Liebe Julia,
Amir

About 80 words. All four questions are answered, it uses past tense (haben … gebracht), connectors (aber, dass, deshalb) and a question back.

Speaking practice

Aufgabe 2:
A: Wann wollen wir das Fest machen? Vielleicht am Freitag nach der Arbeit?
B: Freitag ist gut, aber um 16 Uhr gehen viele schon nach Hause. Lieber um drei?
A: Okay, um drei. Und wo? Im Büro ist es ein bisschen eng.
B: Wir können den Besprechungsraum nehmen, der ist groß.
A: Gute Idee. Was machen wir mit dem Essen? Ich kann eine Torte backen.
B: Super! Ich kaufe Getränke und Brot. Und als Geschenk? Was meinst du?
A: Sie fährt gern Rad. Vielleicht ein Gutschein für ein Sportgeschäft?
B: Das finde ich toll. Ich sammle das Geld von den Kollegen.

FAQ

How long is the ÖSD A2 exam?

The written module takes about 75 minutes without a break: reading 30, listening about 15 and writing 30 minutes. The speaking test takes about 10 minutes, plus 10 minutes of preparation.

What is the pass mark for ÖSD A2?

You need at least 35 of 70 points in the written module and 10 of 20 points in the oral module. Each written part also has its own minimum, so you cannot ignore one skill completely.

How many words should the A2 e-mail have?

The task does not set a strict number, but the official scoring deducts points for texts under 40 words. Aim for 50–70 words and answer every guiding question.

Is the speaking test with a partner?

It can be a pair exam with another candidate or an individual exam, where an examiner plays your partner. The tasks are the same.

Can I use a dictionary?

No. Dictionaries are not allowed in the ÖSD A2 exam.

Is ÖSD A2 the same as the Austrian integration exam?

No. The integration exams in Austria are run by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). ÖSD A2 is an independent general language certificate. Some residence procedures accept ÖSD certificates, but ask the authority which exam it needs for your case.
