HOW TO LEARN GERMAN

ÖSD Zertifikat B1: Format, Practice Test & Model Answers

Learn · Practice · Improve

The ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) is one of the most popular German certificates, used for jobs, studies, and residence or naturalisation procedures. It was developed jointly by ÖSD, the Goethe-Institut and the University of Fribourg, so it is the same exam as the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. This ÖSD Zertifikat B1 preparation guide explains all four modules, gives you strategies and traps for each part, a full practice set with model answers, phrase tables and a 4-week plan. For all ÖSD levels, see our ÖSD exam overview.

ÖSD B1 or Goethe B1 – what’s the difference?

The tasks, timing and scoring are the same, because it is one shared exam. The difference is who issues the certificate (ÖSD or the Goethe-Institut) and where you can take it. ÖSD centres and Goethe centres both offer it worldwide. This means that every Goethe B1 practice test is also perfect ÖSD B1 practice, including our B1 mock exams. One thing to keep in mind: the ÖSD version features speakers and texts from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, so get used to all three accents.

Do not confuse the ÖSD Zertifikat B1 with the Zertifikat Deutsch Österreich B1 (ZDÖ B1). The ZDÖ B1 is a different ÖSD exam with its own format.

Lesen (Reading) – 65 minutes, 30 items

Reading is the longest module. You read five types of text: a personal text like a blog, short informational articles, advertisements, opinions from readers and a set of rules or instructions. The last 5 minutes are for transferring your answers to the answer sheet.

Part Text Task Items Suggested time
1 Personal text, e.g. a blog post Right / wrong (richtig/falsch) 6 about 10 min
2 Two shorter informational texts (press, work, school) Multiple choice a/b/c 6 about 20 min
3 Ten ads and seven situations Matching. One situation has no matching ad. 7 about 10 min
4 Seven short opinions on a controversial topic Is the person for it? Ja/Nein 7 about 15 min
5 Rules or instructions, e.g. house rules Multiple choice a/b/c 4 about 10 min

Strategy step by step

  1. Part 1: statements follow the order of the text. Find the matching sentence and check every detail: who, when, how often.
  2. Part 2: read the question stem, then find the paragraph. Eliminate options that are true in the text but do not answer the question.
  3. Part 3: underline two or three conditions in each situation (for example: cheap, at the weekend, with children). An ad must meet all of them. Use “0” when no ad fits, and remember that there is exactly one such situation.
  4. Part 4: ask only one question: is the writer for or against the idea in the title? Read the whole comment, because the opinion often comes at the end.
  5. Part 5: look for words like müssen, dürfen nicht, nur, verboten, erlaubt.
  6. Watch the clock. If one part takes too long, mark your best guess and move on.

Typical traps

Hören (Listening) – about 40 minutes, 30 items

The audio runs without stopping, including the instructions and pauses. Before each part you get time to read the items. The last 5 minutes are for transferring answers.

Part Text Task Items Played
1 Five short texts: announcements, radio messages, voicemails One right/wrong and one a/b/c item per text 10 twice
2 A longer monologue, e.g. a guided tour or short talk Multiple choice a/b/c 5 once
3 An everyday conversation between two people Right / wrong 7 once
4 A radio discussion with a host and two guests Who says what? Match statements to the three people. 8 twice

Strategy step by step

  1. Use every second of reading time. Underline key words in the items and predict what you might hear.
  2. Part 1: the first listening gives you the right/wrong answer, and the second confirms the detail for a/b/c (often a time, a platform or a place).
  3. Parts 2 and 3 are played only once. Keep your eyes on the next item, because the answers come in order.
  4. Part 4: learn the names and roles at the start (host, guest 1, guest 2). During the first listening mark the answers you are sure of, and use the second listening for the rest.
  5. Never leave a gap. Guess if you have to.

Typical traps

Schreiben (Writing) – 60 minutes

You write three texts directly on the answer sheet. You may use scrap paper, but leave time to copy. The examiners look at task fulfilment, coherence, vocabulary and grammar.

Task Text type Length Suggested time Points
1 Personal (informal) e-mail with three points, e.g. describe, give a reason, make a suggestion about 80 words 20 min 40
2 Your opinion in a discussion or guest-book post on a given topic about 80 words 25 min 40
3 Short formal e-mail, e.g. apologise or ask for something about 40 words 15 min 20

Strategy step by step

  1. Read all three tasks first. Note the register: du (Task 1) or Sie (Task 3). Task 2 is a public comment, so you don’t use a greeting.
  2. Task 1: write one short paragraph for each of the three points, in the order given. Add a greeting, an opening sentence and a closing.
  3. Task 2: structure: refer to the topic – your opinion – two reasons or an example – a conclusion. Use Meiner Meinung nach …, Einerseits … andererseits …, Deshalb …
  4. Task 3: formal greeting – reason for writing – apology or request with a reason – a polite closing with Mit freundlichen Grüßen.
  5. Keep 5 minutes to check: verb position after weil/dass/wenn, noun capitals, and whether every content point is covered.

Typical traps

Sprechen (Speaking) – about 15 minutes

Speaking is usually a pair exam. Individual exams are only held in exceptional cases. You get 15 minutes of preparation. Two examiners assess you, and pronunciation counts as a separate criterion.

Part 1 – Planning something together (interaction)

You and your partner plan an activity, for example helping a friend move or organising a class trip. Your worksheet has four guiding points. You make suggestions, react to your partner and agree on a plan.

Part 2 – Presentation (monologue)

You choose one of two topics and present it using five prompt slides: introduce the topic, talk about your own experience, describe the situation in your home country, give pros and cons and your opinion, then conclude and thank the audience.

Part 3 – Feedback and a question

After your partner’s presentation you react to it (give feedback) and ask one question. Then your partner does the same for you, and you answer their question.

Strategy step by step

  1. Spend about 5 minutes of preparation on Part 1 and 10 minutes on Part 2. Write key words, not sentences.
  2. Part 1: work through all four points. Make suggestions, give reasons, accept or reject politely, and summarise the plan at the end.
  3. Part 2: follow the five slides in order and announce each step: Ich möchte jetzt über meine Erfahrungen sprechen. Speak for about 3 minutes.
  4. Part 3: listen actively during your partner’s talk and note one thing to praise and one question.
  5. Practise the whole test with a timer. The flow of the conversation counts as much as correct grammar.

Typical traps

Reading practice 1 – Blog post (right or wrong?)

Mein Jahr ohne Auto

– richtig / falsch

5. Ohne eigenes Auto spart sie Geld. – richtig / falsch

6. Sie überlegt, wieder ein Auto zu kaufen. – richtig / falsch

Answer key

1. richtig (they laughed and asked how she would manage). 2. falsch (nicht leicht). 3. falsch (meistens mit dem E-Bike). 4. richtig (carsharing). 5. richtig. 6. falsch (möchte nicht zurück).

Note: bin … gestanden is the Austrian (and southern German) perfect form. In Germany you usually hear habe … gestanden. Both are correct standard German.

Reading practice 2 – Opinions (for or against?)

Thema: Sollten Supermärkte am Sonntag geöffnet sein?

Answer key

1. Ja. 2. Nein (starts with Klar wäre es praktisch, but the opinion is against). 3. Ja (it is normal elsewhere, and she doesn’t understand the debate). 4. Nein (Deshalb bin ich dagegen, which is the classic trap at the end).

Reading practice 3 – House rules

Hausordnung – Studentenheim Gartenhof

1. Was müssen Bewohner mit Lebensmitteln im Kühlschrank machen? a) Sie müssen sie jeden Freitag wegwerfen. b) Sie müssen Namen und Datum darauf schreiben. c) Sie dürfen sie nur bis 23 Uhr dort lassen.

Answer key

1 – b. Option a is a trap: only unlabelled food is thrown away. 2 – b (spätestens zwei Tage vorher).

Listening practice – Announcement (Part 1 style, played twice)

Answer key

1. richtig (fährt heute nicht). 2. b. Option a is mentioned but is the usual place, nicht wie sonst.

Listening practice – Conversation (Part 3 style, played once)

Hörtext (Skript):

Lena: Hey Murat! Du warst ja ewig nicht beim Volleyball. Alles okay?

– richtig / falsch

2. Murat arbeitet gern an seiner neuen Arbeitsstelle. – richtig / falsch

3. Murat kommt nächste Woche zum Training. – richtig / falsch

4. Murat bringt zum Grillfest einen Salat mit. – richtig / falsch

Answer key

1. falsch (new job, evening shifts). 2. richtig (Sehr sogar). 3. falsch (only from next month). 4. richtig.

Writing practice 1 – Personal e-mail (about 80 words, 20 minutes)

Answer key

Lieber Paul,
Jana

About 90 words. Three points in order: description, reason (weil …), suggestion with time and place.

Writing practice 2 – Your opinion (about 80 words, 25 minutes)

Answer key

About 80 words: it reacts to the comment, states an opinion, gives two reasons with connectors and offers a compromise.

Writing practice 3 – Formal e-mail (about 40 words, 15 minutes)

Answer key

Sehr geehrte Frau Weber,
Carlos Mendes

About 45 words, with a formal greeting, a reason, a polite request (Wäre es möglich …) and a formal closing.

Speaking practice

Teil 1 – Gemeinsam etwas planen: Eine Freundin zieht nächsten Monat um. Sie möchten ihr zusammen helfen. Besprechen Sie: Wann helfen? Transport? Wer bringt was mit? Essen und Getränke?

Teil 2 – Ein Thema präsentieren: „Online einkaufen oder im Geschäft?“ (Folien: Thema vorstellen – persönliche Erfahrungen – Situation im Heimatland – Vor- und Nachteile, Meinung – Abschluss und Dank)

Teil 3 – Über ein Thema sprechen: Reagieren Sie auf die Präsentation Ihres Partners und stellen Sie eine Frage.

Answer key

Teil 1:
A: Wann sollen wir Sabine helfen?
B: Samstag passt mir gut.
B: Perfekt! Dann bringe ich Kartons und Werkzeug mit.
A: Gut.
A: Genau, so machen wir’s.

FAQ

Is the ÖSD B1 the same as the Goethe B1?

Yes. The ÖSD Zertifikat B1 and the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 are one exam, developed jointly by ÖSD, the Goethe-Institut and the University of Fribourg. Only the issuing institution differs, and the ÖSD version includes speakers and texts from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

What is the pass mark for ÖSD B1?

Each of the four modules is scored out of 100 points, and you need at least 60 points to pass a module. Each module is passed or failed separately.

Can I retake just one module?

Yes. You can take and repeat each module separately, as often as you like. If you pass all four within one year at the same exam centre, you receive one full certificate.

Is ÖSD B1 accepted for German citizenship?

ÖSD states that the ÖSD Zertifikat B1 is accepted as proof of German for naturalisation in Germany. The naturalisation authority makes the final decision, so confirm with your local office, especially if you only have module certificates.

How long is the speaking test, and do I need a partner?

It usually takes about 15 minutes as a pair exam with another candidate, after 15 minutes of preparation. Individual exams (about 10 minutes) are only held in exceptional cases. The exam centre assigns your partner.

How many words do I need to write?

About 80 words for the personal e-mail, about 80 for the opinion text and about 40 for the formal e-mail, in 60 minutes in total.

Can I use a dictionary in the B1 exam?

No. Dictionaries are not allowed in the ÖSD Zertifikat B1.
